HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- Freshman RHP Erin Hoehn registered her first collegiate no-hitter as the University of Michigan softball team split its opening games the NKU Spring Classic, beating Bowling Green 8-0 in six innings before falling to host Northern Kentucky, 3-2, on Sunday (March 10) at Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.
Hoehn (6-2) posted a career-high 11 strikeouts against the Falcons, including three apiece in the fourth and sixth innings, and allowed just three total base runners on a hit-by-pitch and two walks. She is the first Wolverine freshman to throw a no-hitter since Meghan Beaubien in 2018.
Michigan built its lead early then all at once against BGSU, scoring two in the first inning and a five-spot in the sixth to end the game early. Eight different Wolverines tallied hits, while freshman Ava Costales led U-M with three RBI on a bases-clearing pinch-hit double in the sixth.
U-M walked the bases loaded with no outs before Costales entered to hit, lining her three-run double down the leftfield line to double the Wolverine lead and earn the first RBI of her collegiate career. Sophomore second baseman Indiana Langford reentered for Costales and scored from second on a wild pitch and, with the bases reloaded, Hoehn was hit by a pitch to push across the game-ending run.
Sophomore/freshman catcher Lilly Vallimont and freshman outfielder Ella Stephenson scored Michigan's runs in the first inning with a looped RBI single over the second baseman's head and a two-out line-drive single to left, respectively.
The Wolverines fell behind in the third innings against Northern Kentucky, and their late rally came up short. NKU put up three runs in the third on a fielder's choice and subsequent two-run homer.
Michigan scored twice in the fifth after a Stephenson leadoff double and Hoehn RBI single, then another following a single to right center from junior outfielder Ellie Sieler. Freshman pinch runner Lexi Dellamonica held up at third on the play but scored when the NKU catcher threw the ball into the outfield.
Back-to-back groundouts halted the fifth-inning rally before U-M stranded two in the sixth and another in the seventh. Michigan left seven total runners on base in the game.
Junior RHP Lauren Derkowski (4-5) took the loss from the circle, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on four hits and two walks. She struck out six.
The Wolverines (12-9) will wrap up the NKU Spring Classic tomorrow (Monday, March 11) with a 1 p.m. game against Illinois State at Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field.
