
U-M to Kick Off B1G Action with Split Weekend at OSU, vs. Penn State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (12-3) kicks off Big Ten action this weekend, traveling to No. 11 Ohio State (7-5) on Friday (March 15) at 6 p.m. and hosting Penn State (1-8) on Sunday (March 17) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Sunday's match will be at 11 a.m., with the men's team hosting Ohio State at 3 p.m.
Admission is free to all matches at the VTC.
Notes
• Michigan begins Big Ten action this weekend, traveling to Columbus to face the No. 11-ranked Buckeyes (7-5) on Friday before returning home to host Penn State (1-8) on Sunday.
• U-M is 158-8 (.952) in Big Ten regular-season play under head coach Ronni Bernstein. She has led the Wolverines to 10 of the last 13 Big Ten championship titles awarded (no title awarded in 2020), as well as five tournament crowns since taking over prior to the 2007-08 season.
• U-M will play 11 Big Ten matches this season, starting with this split weekend. The Wolverines will not face Illinois or Northwestern during the regular season, with the Big Ten Tournament taking place at the VTC (April 24-28).
• Michigan has won 17 straight Big Ten regular-season matches after going 11-0 last season to win the Big Ten championship. U-M's last Big Ten loss came at the hand of the Buckeyes on April 1, 2022.
• The Wolverines concluded the non-conference season with a 12-3 record after rallying for a 4-2 win over then-No. 8 Pepperdine. U-M faced a ranked opponent in all but four non-conference matches. In the newest team rankings released Tuesday (March 12), Michigan has wins over No. 4 Pepperdine, No. 5 Virginia (twice), No. 8 NC State (twice), No. 12 Cal, No. 16 Florida and No. 21 Oklahoma.
• Michigan stayed at No. 2 in this week's ITA team rankings.
• Piper Charney joined Kari Miller in the 20-win club by virtue of a straight-set win at Hawai'i (March 1). Charney won the race to 10 dual-match wins, clinching Michigan's win over No. 8 Pepperdine (March 10) with a three-set win at No. 5. Charney is 10-3 in dual matches, going 6-3 at No. 5 and 4-0 at No. 6.
• Five Wolverines are ranked in the latest singles rankings, led by Miller at No. 5. Julia Fliegner (No. 18), Gala Mesochoritou (No. 44), Lily Jones (No. 61) and Jaedan Brown (No. 81) are each ranked in singles. Brown and Miller are in at No. 4 this week in the doubles rankings.
• Singles play has been strong for the Wolverines in dual-match action. U-M is 47-20 in singles play, good for a .701 winning percentage. U-M is 26-8 at the Nos. 4-6 positions, good for a .765 winning percentage.
• Michigan is 9-0 when winning the doubles point this season and 3-3 without securing the match's first point, getting wins over No. 15 Cal, No. 5 NC State and No. 8 Pepperdine after falling in doubles play.
