
Hrustich's Two-Homer Day Not Enough as Wolverines Fall to San Diego in Series Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell 8-6 to San Diego on Friday afternoon (March 15) in the series opener at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (6-11) was led offensively by a trio of home runs, two from Stephen Hrustich and another from Mack Timbrook -- his first as a Wolverine. Tmibrook added another hit, two RBI and a run. Mitch Voit (1-3) pitched eight strong innings and added three hits and an RBI.
San Diego (8-7)Â took a quick lead in the top of the first after a leadoff triple was followed by a sacrifice bunt two batters later. The Wolverines (6-12) got the run back just as quickly when Timbrook led off the bottom of the first with an opposite-field shot to left to tie the game a one apiece.
After allowing the first-inning run, Voit settled in and retired the next nine Toreros to hold them to one run through four innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Kyle Dernedde singled up the middle with one out and was brought home on a Dylan Stanton double to put U-M ahead 2-1. The Wolverines added a pair of runs thanks to a groundout and a Voit double to take a 4-1 lead.
The Toreros drew even at four via a fifth-inning homer and a double and passed ball in the sixth.
Hrustitch put Michigan back in front 6-5 with a home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but San Diego bounced back in the eighth to grab the lead for good when a three-run frame put the visitors ahead 7-5.
After an attempted Wolverines rally was thwarted in the eighth, San Diego posted an insurance run in the top of the ninth to extend its lead to 8-5.
U-M opened the ninth inning with a leadoff home run from Hrustich, his second of the game, but but the next three batters went down in order and Michigan fell 8-6.
The Wolverines will look to even the series with San Diego when they host to Toreros on Saturday (March 16) at Ray Fisher Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
