
Michigan Drops Game Two of Series Against San Diego

» Michigan fell 16-7 to San Diego in the second game of their three-game series.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Three big San Diego innings were the difference as the University of Michigan baseball team took a 16-7 loss against the Toreros on Saturday (March 16) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (6-13) put up a run each in the first, third and sixth innings, preceding a four-run eighth, but it was too little too late. San Diego scored four in the first, three in the fifth and two in the seventh before plating seven runs in the top of the eighth.
Cole Caruso collected three RBI on the day and Joe Longo knocked in two. Mitch Voit and Kyle Dernedde tallied two hits each.
Voit scored U-M's first run of the game after singling and later came home on a Longo groundout, putting the Maize and Blue up 1-0 after one inning. San Diego (10-7)Â surged ahead 4-1 in the top of the second inning.
Michigan got a run back in the bottom of the third, when Stephen Hrustich reached home on a fielder's choice off the bat of Caruso. After a scoreless fourth inning, the Toreos once again found multiple runs with the big blow a two-run home run to left-center to give the visitors a 7-2 lead.
The Wolverines found another run in the bottom of the sixth, when a Mack Timbrook fielder's choice scored Will Rogers for U-M's third run of the contest.
San Diego scored seven times in the top of the eighth inning, halted briefly by rain, on only three hits to increase its lead to 16-3. The Wolverines responded in the bottom of the eighth, when AJ Garcia singled to center and while Jack Counsell and Ian Kennedy drew walks to load the bases with no outs. A Longo hit-by-pitch, a Caruso double down the left-field line which scored two and a Dylan Stanton groundout accounted for four Wolverines runs to make the score 16-7.
The Wolverines conclude their three-game set against the Toreros on Sunday (March 17), with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at ray Fisher Stadium. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
