HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team ran its winning streak to three, getting a 4-1 win over Hawai'i on Friday evening (March 1) at the UH Tennis Complex.
Michigan struck first, taking the doubles point behind wins at No. 2 and No. 3. U-M's freshman duo of Piper Charney and Reese Miller continued its strong play in dual-match action, blanking Hawai'i for a 6-0 win at No. 2.
After Hawai'i evened up the doubles ledger with a win at the top spot, Michigan put the first point on the board behind a 6-2 win from Jaedan Brown and Gala Mesochoritou at No. 3. The senior duo raced out to a 4-1 lead and did not look back in clinching the first point of the match for the Maize and Blue.
Reese Miller did not drop a game in her dual-match debut, getting a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 to push Michigan's lead to 2-0.
Charney put Michigan on the brink of victory behind a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5. She took control early in both sets, picking up her 20th singles win of the season.
After Charney pushed Michigan's lead to 3-0, the match went into a rain delay that lasted more than an hour.
Upon return to play, Hawai'i got on the board with a win at No. 3, but Michigan was able to close out the match moments later.
Kari Miller put the deciding point on the board for Michigan, weathering a slow start in the first set. She found herself in a 4-1 hole before winning six of the next seven games for a 7-5 first-set win. The momentum followed her into the second set as she coasted to the 6-0 victory.
The teams were attempting to play out the remaining matches on court, but the rain came back and forced the match to end with a 4-1 margin for Michigan.
Michigan returns to home action at the Varsity Tennis Center next Sunday (March 10), hosting Pepperdine at noon.
