
Michigan Earns No. 3 seed in 2024 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (21-14-3) is a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament as announced Sunday (March 24) on ESPNU during the NCAA Selection Show. Michigan will take on No. 2 seed North Dakota (26-11-2) in the St. Louis Regional at 7:30 p.m. CDT on Friday (March 29) at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Mo. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
No. 1 seed Michigan State and No. 4 seed Western Michigan will meet in the other regional semifinal. The regional's two semifinal winners will play on Sunday (March 31) at 5:30 p.m., CDT for a spot in the Frozen Four.
Michigan earned one of 10 at-large bids in the program's 41st appearance in the NCAA tournament, the most by any program. The Wolverines boast a 57-32 record in the NCAA Tournament, including a record nine national championships.
Michigan reached the B1G Tournament Championship for the third straight season. The Wolverines boast six point-per-game players including the Big Ten Player of the Year Gavin Brindley. He, along with Rutger McGroarty and Seamus Casey, also are first team All-Big Ten selections as well as all-tournament team selections. Michigan owns the third best scoring offense in the country, averaging 4.22 points per game. Michigan has had the top power play all season, currently sitting at 35.3 percent.
Michigan NCAA Tournament Notes
• Michigan has been the No. 3 seed three other times since the bracket was expanded to 16 in 2003. The Wolverines were No. 3 in 2003, 2006 and 2010, making the Frozen Four in 2003.
• U-M has 27 Frozen Four appearances, the most in college hockey. That includes a stretch of 10 consecutive appearances from 1948-57.
• Michigan owns nine national championships, most in Division I ice hockey (1948, '51, '52, '53, '55, '56, '64, '96, '98). The last national title came in 1998 when U-M defeated Boston College 3-2 in overtime.
• The Wolverines have made 12 championship game appearances (1948, '51, '52, '53, '55, '56, '57, '64, '77, '96, '98, 2011).
• Michigan's 22 consecutive tournaments made from 1991-2012 is the longest streak ever.
• Former Michigan coach Vic Heyliger's six championships are the most of any coach, and his 10 consecutive Frozen Four appearances are double the next-longest streak of consecutive Frozen Fours by a coach.
• Former coach Red Berenson made 23 tournament appearances, second all-time among coaches.
