
Michigan Sweeps Rutgers for Eighth Straight Win

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team defeated Rutgers by a 4-0 score on Sunday (March 24) at the East Brunswick Racquet Club.
Michigan took the doubles point behind wins at No. 2 and No. 1 for the early 1-0 advantage.
U-M's No. 2 freshman duo of Piper Charney and Reese Miller finished first, getting a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot to give Michigan the early lead in doubles action. The Wolverines were on serve throughout the first several games before getting a break at 4-2 after being down 40-15. The pair consolidated it in the next game and both teams held serve over the final two games for a 6-3 Michigan win.
Rutgers evened the ledger a few minutes later with a win at No. 3 after jumping out to a 2-0 lead that Michigan could never get back.
At the top spot, Michigan's No. 4-ranked duo of Kari Miller and Jaedan Brown clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win. U-M won the first three games, but Rutgers answered to get back on serve at 4-3 Michigan. The Wolverines answered back with a break, giving them a chance to serve out the match but Rutgers won the ensuing game to keep the match on serve at 5-4. U-M grabbed four match points in the next game, converting on the third to wrap up a 6-4 win.
Piper Charney delivered Michigan's first singles win, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 for a 2-0 U-M lead.
Gala Mesochoritou put the Wolverines on the brink of victory with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2, pushing the advantage to 3-0.
Brown sealed the 4-0 victory for Michigan with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles.
The win is Michigan's eighth straight and fourth in a row in Big Ten action this season.
Michigan returns home next weekend for a pair of matches, first hosting Indiana on Saturday (March 30) at 11 a.m. Admission to all matches at the Varsity Tennis Center is free.
