
Michigan to Return to the VTC for Indiana, Purdue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (16-3, 4-0 B1G) returns home to host a pair of matches this weekend, welcoming Indiana (6-13, 0-5 B1G) to the Varsity Tennis Center on Saturday (March 30) at 11 a.m. and Purdue (9-6, 2-3 B1G) on Sunday (March 31) at noon.
Admission is free to all matches at the VTC. Matches shall be played outdoors unless the projected weather forecast, for a minimum of two hours out of a four-hour time period from the start of the match, according to www.weather.com is: a high of less than 50 degrees or sustained winds (not including wind gusts) of more than 20 mph.
Notes
• Michigan (16-3, 4-0 B1G) returns home to the Varsity Tennis Center to host Indiana (6-13, 0-5 B1G) and Purdue (9-6, 2-3 B1G). U-M is 8-1 at the VTC this season.
• Michigan has won eight straight matches, equaling its longest winning streak of the season. U-M ripped off eight straight from Jan. 21-Feb. 11 on the strength of making a run to the championship match of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
• U-M recorded a 4-0 win last season in West Lafayette over Purdue, moving to 48-12 all-time against the Boilers.
• The Wolverines followed that match up with a 6-1 win at Indiana, marking Michigan's 16th win over the Hoosiers in the last 17 matches.
• This weekend will mark Purdue's second trip to the VTC this season after participating in the ITA Kickoff Weekend (Jan. 26-27). The Boilers went 1-1 at the event, getting a 4-2 win over Utah in the consolation final match.
• Michigan has won 21 straight Big Ten regular season matches after going 2-0 last weekend with wins at Maryland (March 23) and at Rutgers (March 24). U-M's last Big Ten loss came at the hand of the Buckeyes on April 1, 2022.
• The Wolverines are one of three unbeaten teams remaining in Big Ten play at 4-0. They are joined by Northwestern at 4-0 and Wisconsin at 3-0. Â
• Kari Miller got a win over No. 85-ranked Selma Cadar of Maryland last weekend (March 23), moving her record to 26-7 and 11-4 at No. 1. She is up to 91 career wins, becoming just the 13th Wolverine in program history to reach the mark. With four more wins, she will break into the top 10 in Michigan history without even playing a fall season during her freshman season.
• Gala Mesochoritou joined the 20-win club last time out, getting a pair of straight-set wins at the No. 2 position against Maryland (March 23) and Rutgers (March 24). She joins Miller (26) and Piper Charney (24) as Wolverines to win at least 20 singles matches this season.
• U-M is 162-8 (.953) in Big Ten regular-season play under head coach Ronni Bernstein. She has led the Wolverines to 10 of the last 13 Big Ten championship titles awarded (no title awarded in 2020), as well as five tournament crowns since taking over prior to the 2007-08 season.
• Michigan stayed at No. 2 in this week's ITA team rankings. Michigan played eight matches against teams in the top 10 in this week's rankings, picking up five wins during non-conference play.
• U-M has six players currently ranked in singles, highlighted by a career-high No. 3 ranking for Miller. Julia Fliegner is No. 19, Mesochoritou is No. 44, Lily Jones is No. 68, Jaedan Brown is No. 102 and Charney is back in at No. 115. Brown and Kari Miller stayed at No. 4 in the newest doubles rankings.
• Michigan is one of three schools nationally to have at least six ranked singles players. New individual rankings will be released on April 2.
• Singles play has been strong for the Wolverines in dual-match action. U-M is 60-21 in singles play, good for a .741 winning percentage. Charney (13), Jones (10), Miller (11) and Mesochoritou (12) have each reached double-digit wins in dual matches. Â
• Michigan is 12-0 when winning the doubles point this season and 4-3 without securing the match's first point, getting wins over No. 15 Cal, No. 5 NC State, No. 8 Pepperdine and Maryland after falling in doubles play.
