
Michigan Men Score in Both Relays on First Night of NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team opened the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday (March 27) at IU Natatorium. After two events, U-M sits at 13th with a total of 18 points. Florida and California are tied for the early lead with 70 points.
The first evening of competition featured two relays, the 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relay races.
Jack Wilkening (backstroke), Brendan Fitzpatrick (breaststroke), Tyler Ray (butterfly) and Bence Szabados (freestyle) got the meet started in the 200-yard medley relay. Racing in the second heat of the timed final, the quartet posted a 1:23.54, taking 13th overall. Szabados anchored the relay with an 18.70 split in the freestyle leg to give the Wolverines a solid start to the national championships.
Eitan Ben-Shitrit, Gal Groumi, Ozan Kalafat and Logan Zucker hit the pool for the second and final event of the evening, the 800-yard freestyle relay. Groumi's leadoff 200 free time of 1:31.07 set a new program mark by nearly a full second, and the quartet combined to log a time of 6:11.55 -- placing 12th overall.
The NCAA Championships continue on Thursday (March 28) with the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle relay. Trials will start at 10 a.m., and finals will begin at 6 p.m.
