
Groumi, 200-Freestyle Relay Team Break School Records on Day 2 at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team broke two school records on the second day of the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday (March 28) at IU Natatorium.
Through two days, Michigan boasts 48 points and checks in at 12th. Top-ranked Arizona State leads with 201 points.
U-M first swimmers of the morning hit the pool for the 200-yard IM trials. Gal Groumi threw down a 1:40.54 to post the third-best mark of the preliminary and punch his ticket to the championship final. Sophomore Eitan Ben-Shitrit logged a 1:41.66 to finish 10th and earn a second swim on Thursday night. Colin Geer clocked a 1:43.05, securing 25th overall.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Bence Szabados registered a 19.09 to tie for 19th overall, and Jack Wilkening finished 51st with a mark of 19.93.
Ben-Shitrit got the finals session started for the Maize and Blue in the 200-yard IM consolation final, clocking a 1:42.95 to take 15th overall. Gal Groumi set the new program standard in the 200-IM, logging 1:39.87 to become the first Wolverine to ever post a 200 IM time faster than 1:40. Groumi finished fifth to earn All-America honors.
Groumi, Szabados, Tyler Ray and Wilkening closed out the second day with the 200-yard freestyle relay, breaking the school record the same four men set at the Big Ten Championships earlier this season. The quartet dashed through the pool to register a 1:15.80 and take 10th overall.
Michigan will return for day three of the NCAA Championships on Friday (March 29). The penultimate day will feature the 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, three-meter diving and 400-yard medley relay. Trials will get underway at 10:00 a.m. with the finals commencing at 6:00 p.m.
