
Groumi Sets 100 Butterfly School Record on Day Three of NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the penultimate day of competition at the NCAA Championships on Friday (March 29) at IU Natatorium. With one day remaining, Michigan checks in at 14th with a total of 68.5 points. Arizona State remains in front with a score of 343.
The first Wolverines to hit the water were Colin Geer, Gal Groumi and Tyler Ray for the 100-yard butterfly. Groumi posted a 44.62 to advance to the championship final while Ray just missed the A final, finishing ninth in the prelim with a mark of 44.74. Geer took 36th with a time of 46.17.
Eitan Ben-Shitrit represented U-M in the 200-yard freestyle; the sophomore finished 28th overall, touching the wall at 1:32.85. Jack Wilkening closed out the swim portion of the morning session in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking a 45.85 to take 28th. In the dive well, Cameron Gammage finished 29th with a score of 334.60.
In the lone individual final of the night session, Groumi bettered his own school record with a time of 44.46 to finish in a tie for seventh overall. Ray posted a 45.24 to take 16th overall. Wilkening (backstroke), Brendan Fitzpatrick (breaststroke), Groumi (butterfly) and Bence Szabados (freestyle) wrapped up day three with the 400-yard medley relay. The quartet posted a 3:03.93 to finish 13th overall.
The NCAA Championships conclude on Saturday (March 30) with the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 1,650-yard freestyle, platform diving and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Trials will start at 10:00 a.m. with finals coming at 6:00 p.m.
