BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan rowing program played host to a set of four head-to-head races with No. 2 Texas on Saturday (April 13), posting fast times in a set of competitive events. The Wolverines closed the morning by celebrating a 15-person senior class, welcoming fans and families alike to Belleville Lake in the final home event of the 2024 season.
As races began, the sun was out and temperatures were in the low-to-mid 40s. Varsity eights raced first to stay clear of winds which picked up slightly as the morning wore on. There was a slight chop as a product of a west-blowing crosswind during racing. Overall, it was a competitive day of racing between two of the nation's most successful and top-ranked programs.
In the 1V8 race, it was tight early as the Wolverines opened with a strong stroke rate. Texas worked to move a few seats up on the Maize and Blue in the early going but it was tight racing. Past the 500-meter mark, the boats remained in contact as the Longhorns worked a few seats ahead. Both boats upped their paces over the second half of the race and UT continued to push ahead, but the Wolverines made them earn each seat they took. Fast times prevailed across the finish line and it was Texas (6:08.10) across first, 5.2 seconds ahead of U-M in a competitive race.
The second eight event saw Texas' opening rate give them a quick lead which grew to open water by the midway point. The Maize and Blue had trouble matching the fast-paced rate of UT in the early going. As U-M found its stroke, there was too much ground to recover despite a solid pace. They pushed back into the Texas lead in the middle 500 and final 750, but it was UT across first at 6:22.3.
In the 1V4, it was Michigan with the aggressive start. The Wolverines pulled a move in the early going that gave them a slim advantage, but between 500 and 750 meters, the Longhorns countered with a strong move of their own and walked through to take the lead. That surge put Texas ahead for the duration of the race, putting open water on Michigan near the 1,000-meter mark. U-M pushed into the final stretch of the race and rowed hard into the sprint but could not make up the ground it needed to stay in contact across the finish line.
In the second four event, both boats began cleanly and stayed in contact for much of the race. Texas took the early lead by a few seats, but the Wolverines put a move on near 500 meters and worked their way back into a competitive position. Over the halfway point, UT put a little bit of open water on the Michigan boat and continued to push the pace. U-M countered and earned back a few seats, and Texas continued to respond. The final stretch of the race made for a competitive finish, with Michigan crossing 7.17 seconds behind the winning UT boat (7:05.9).
The Wolverines raced one intersquad race after head-to-head events began. In the eight race, U-M's 3V8 raced against an open eight (half varsity, half novice) and both the 1N8 and 2N8.
The third eight led early and did not relinquish its lead. A wire-to-wire victory came in 6:41.0, with the first novice eight about 10 seconds behind. The 2N finished third with a mixed eight boat coming in fourth.
After races, the Wolverines celebrated their 15-person senior class with Senior Day ceremonies. Zara Collisson, Annaka Draaisma, Ainslie Evans, Delaney Evans, Aubrey Fitts, Brooke Gietzen, Adelaide Lammers, Lauren Langley, Sarah McKay, Olivia McMullen, Rocky Morabito, Emily Nelson, Rachel Palaian, Ariana Shokoohi, and Margaret Vander Woude and their families were honored on the deck at the conclusion of the day.
Next Friday and Saturday (April 19-20), the Wolverines will travel to Florida for the Big Ten Invitational at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota. The event traditionally features some of the nation's best teams.
