COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team had a seven-match win streak come to an end in a 4-0 loss Sunday (April 14) at the hands of No. 1-ranked Ohio State at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center. It marks the first conference loss for the Wolverines, who move to 7-1 in the Big Ten.
The doubles point came down to No. 1 in a tiebreak after the teams split at No. 2 and No. 3. Will Cooksey and Patorn Hanchaikul earned their first win over a ranked duo with a 6-4 win over No. 20-ranked Justin Boulais and Andrew Lutchaunig. Cooksey and Hanchaikul handed the pair its first league loss and snapped a four-match win streak.
No. 24-ranked Gavin Young and Jacob Bickersteth went toe-to-toe with No. 2-ranked Robert Cash and JJ Tracy at No. 1 doubles. Heading into the tiebreak, Michigan's serve was broken as OSU went on a 7-1 run to take the match and the doubles point.
OSU won on courts 2, 3, and 4 to clinch the four points. Hanchaikul had a three-match win streak end with his first Big Ten loss to No. 16-ranked Tracy. Bjorn Swenson fell 6-3, 6-4 to No. 25-ranked Jack Anthrop and Cooksey had his singles win streak end at six with 7-5, 6-4 loss to Alexander Bernard.
Bickersteth had forced a third set at No. 2 after splitting 6-4, 6-3 with Boulais and held a 1-0 edge in the third before it was abandoned. Nicholas Steiglehner held a 5-1 lead in his second set before it was halted, and Young was up 4-3 in his second set to Kinglsey.
Michigan will host Michigan State in the regular-season finale Saturday (April 20). Both teams are 7-1 in the conference and battling for position in the postseason. First serve is set for 4 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
