
Janess' Hole-in-One, Career Low Pace Wolverines to Third After Day 1 of Big Ten's

» With five Wolverines positioned among the top 25, the 37th-ranked Michigan women's golf team posted an even 288 opening team total and positioned itself tied for third after the first day of the Big Ten Championships.
» With an 8-iron from 142 yards, Mara Janess recorded a hole-in-one on the seventh hole. Adding three birdies, she carded a career-low 71 (-1) -- her first sub-par collegiate tally.
» Hailey Borja shot a 71 (-1) with five birdies to tie for sixth, along with Janess. Monet Chun and Lauren Sung's scores of 73 (+1) helped U-M secure four spots within the top 20.
» Lauren Sung carded 13 pars in a row and finished with a total of 17 in her round of 73. She had one bogey on the 14th hole -- a par 4, 331-yard distance.

HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. -- Highlighted with a hole-in-one and career-low 71 (-1) by sophomore Mara Janess as well as five Wolverines among the top 25, the 37th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team etched an even 288 today (Friday, April 19) to position itself tied for third after the first day of the Big Ten Championships at the Bulle Rock Golf Course.
Making her conference championship debut, Janess paced the Wolverines in the opening 18 holes with her career-best 71 (-1) and first sub-par collegiate round. In addition to her three birdies (Nos. 6, 11, 15), she used her 8-iron on the par 3, 142-yard seventh hole to record the third hole-in-one of her golfing career. With a U-M first-round best of five birdies, fifth-year senior Hailey Borja matched Janess with an opening 71 (-1). Both Wolverines sit tied for sixth after 18 holes.
Sophomore Lauren Sung started her opening round with a streak of 13 pars and finished with a total of 17. Despite making a bogey on the 14th hole, she posted a 73 (+1) and tied with senior Monet Chun, who also posted a 73 (+1), for the 16th position. Meanwhile, sophomore Sydney Sung was two over par after the first six holes, but she managed to play even for the remainder of her round, eventually closing the day with a 74 (+2) and in a tie for 25th.
Michigan State's opening total of 279 (-9) gave the Spartans an early eight-shot championship lead. Northwestern (287, -1) is second, while the Wolverines and Indiana (288) are in the third spot. The Wolverines, who will be paired with Spartans and Wildcats, return for the second round on Saturday morning (April 20) in the final wave off the 1st tee at 10:18 a.m.
