ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team earned its fifth conference series victory on Saturday (April 20), taking down Nebraska 6-5 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field at Carol Hutchins Stadium.
Keke Tholl recorded half of the Wolverines' six runs with a three-run home run in the bottom of the second, with Ellie Sieler adding a solo homer in the contest. In the circle, Hannah George (4-1) held the Cornhuskers to one unearned run and three hits in four innings of relief to pick up the win.
Sieler scored the first run of the game with a missile to right-center field, her fourth homer of the season and second to start a game. The scoring continued in the bottom of the second inning, when an RBI single from Indiana Langford and Tholl's three-run blast to deep center pushed the Maize and Blue lead to 5-0.
Nebraska (25-18, 8-5 Big Ten) cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the third inning, but an Ava Costales sacrifice fly to the warning track scored Jenissa Conway from second, and Michigan (32-14, 13-3 Big Ten) held a 6-4 advantage through three innings.
The score stayed pat until the top of the sixth, when Nebraska again narrowed the margin to one. The Cornhuskers put the tying run at second base in the seventh, but George stranded her with two flyouts and a groundout to seal the Wolverine victory.
The Wolverines will go for the sweep on Sunday (April 21) in the series finale with Nebraska. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., and the game will be streamed live in B1G+.
