Back-to-Back Blasts Propel U-M To Series Win Over Ohio State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind back-to-back home runs from Cole Caruso and Will Rogers, the University of Michigan baseball team took the series rubber match 7-5 against Ohio State on Sunday afternoon (April 21st) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (20-21, 10-5 Big Ten) was led by Caruso and Rogers who each tallied two hits and homered in the the sixth inning. Five other Wolverines scored a run in the game with AJ Garcia and Mack Timbrook both tallying two hits as well. Mitch Voit started and went 5.1 innings in a no-decision after he gave up three runs and struck out three. Jacob Denner made his third appearance of the week and collected the win, throwing 3.2 innings of relief, striking out four and allowing two runs.
Ohio State (19-17, 6-6 Big Ten) took the lead in the opening frame, but the Wolverines were unable to match it in the bottom of the inning, but knotted the game in the second. Collin Priest led off with a single before moving to third on a Dylan Stanton single. Mack Timbrook reached on an error allowing Priest to score.
Both pitchers settled in and allowed just five combined runners through the fifth inning before the bats woke up in the sixth.
OSU put two on base in the top of the frame, forcing a call to the bullpen for Denner. The Buckeyes tallied two more hits in the inning, scoring two runs, but Denner shut them down and limited the damage.
In the home half of the sixth, Caruso hit a three-run home run to left field set up by a walk and a single to give Michigan a 4-3 lead. Rogers followed Caruso and went yard himself to extend the U-M lead to 5-3.
OSU got one run back in the top of the seventh to cut the U-M lead to 5-4. In the bottom of the eighth, Michigan added to its lead with three first three batters --- Garcia, Voit and Stephen Hrustich -- doubled to put the Wolverines ahead 7-4.
The Buckeyes managed a run off Denner in the ninth on a sacrifice fly, but a strikeout and flyout ended the game.
The Wolverines continue home action next weekend in a three-game series against Long Beach State beginning on Friday (April 26) at Ray Fisher Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
