ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won its second consecutive outright Big Ten championship on Sunday afternoon (April 21), shutting out Nebraska 4-0 at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan completed the Big Ten season with an 11-0 record to win the championship outright.
The title is Michigan's 12th Big Ten championship in program history and its 11th since 2010. Michigan completed its ninth, and second straight, conference season without a loss.
U-M won the doubles point, getting victories at No. 3 and No. 2.
At No. 3, Julia Fliegner and Lily Jones breezed to a 6-1 win as the first match off court. The Wolverine pair got the break at 3-1 and did not look back in the victory.
Kari Miller and Bayley Sheinin clinched the doubles point for the Maize and Blue, using a well-timed break in a 6-3 win at No. 2. U-M fell in an early 2-0 hole but won the next four games for a 4-2 lead. Nebraska broke to get back on serve at 4-3, but U-M converted on the deuce point on an overrule in the following game for a 5-3 lead. Miller served out the game at love, putting the first point on the board.
Michigan took all six first sets in singles action after Miller and Gala Mesochoritou each rallied from 3-1 deficits for 6-4 wins.
Piper Charney ran her singles winning streak to 13 and finished her freshman season with a 9-0 Big Ten record in singles behind a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 to push the Wolverine lead to 2-0.
A 6-0, 6-2 win from Jones at No. 5 put the Wolverines on the brink with a 3-0 lead. Dating back to her singles match yesterday, Jones won 19 consecutive games across her two matches by winning the final 12 yesterday and the first seven today.
It was a race between Fliegner and Miller to put the fourth point on the board, with each Wolverine just one game away.
It was Fliegner once again clinching the Big Ten championship for the Wolverines much like she did a season ago, winning a 6-2, 6-1 match at No. 3. She used fast starts in each set to get the win, sealing Michigan's title.
The remaining matches were abandoned.
Michigan will be the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament, set for April 24-28 at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M will receive a double-bye into Friday's (April 26) quarterfinals. Admission to the event is free.
