BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan rowing program hosted Michigan State in a set of races on Saturday (April 6) at Belleville Lake. U-M was victorious in all seven events.
It was a beautiful morning for racing with calm waters and temperatures over 40 degrees as events began. The sun shone through to warm competitors and fans and set the stage for a great day. Winds began to pick up midway through the races but never created a noticeable chop.
The day's races were collectively a Maize and Blue showcase. The winning tone was set early and continued through varsity eight races, with Michigan boats leading up and down the course. The Wolverines hoped for faster times and cleaner victories but were glad to see winged oars first across the finish line all morning.
U-M's 1V8 led right out of the blocks and crossed more than 15 seconds ahead of the Spartans' top boat. The second eight put open water on MSU before the 500-meter mark. In a strong effort, the boat led wire-to-wire with a winning time of 6:44.0. U-M also had a third varsity eight competing in the 1N race. In that event, it was Wolverine boats finishing one-two with a margin of under six seconds in one of the most competitive events of the day.
Michigan's fours also showed well with substantial margins of victory in the 1V4 and 3V4 events. The first four registered a fast start and kept its pace up throughout the race. The 3V4 was the first event of the morning and also featured a U-M novice four (N4) which placed third.
The 2V4 race was closer, with the Spartans just 4.10 seconds behind the Wolverines. MSU had the lead in the first quarter of the race before the Maize and Blue powered back, gaining seats back one at a time before retaking the lead near the 1,250-meter mark.
The Wolverines also raced a pair of novice eights in separate events. The 3V8/1N heat was the quicker of the two heats but both races featured comfortable Michigan wins.
Fans who missed today's races can watch video on the team's Instagram account with commentary from U-M alumna and Big Ten Champion Perry Bower.
The Wolverines will go head-to-head against Texas at home next weekend on Saturday, April 13. Races are set to begin at 9 a.m.
