ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team posted a 4-0 win over Purdue on Sunday (April 7) at the Varsity Tennis Center to sweep the weekend and stay unbeaten in the Big Ten.
The Wolverines (12-10, 6-0 Big Ten) claimed their 21st consecutive win over the Boilermakers (6-12, 1-4 Big Ten).
The 23rd-ranked doubles team of Gavin Young and Jacob Bickersteth won their fifth straight match, jumping out to a 3-0 led with two break points and rode the lead to a 6-2 win over Purdue, coached by Young's father, Geoff.
Bjorn Swenson and Mert Oral played and won their first match at No. 2 doubles, as they earned a 6-2 win to improve to 5-1 in conference play to clinch the doubles point for Michigan.
Michigan is now 7-1 win it wins the doubles point this season.
Bickersteth jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Soham Purohit in the first set and had four break points as he won the set 6-2. He followed up with a 6-3 win to put Michigan up 2-0.
Nicholas Steiglehner had a huge win at No. 5 singles over Daniel Labrador, his fourth straight win. Steiglehner trailed 3-1 in the first set before he won three straight games to gain the 4-3 lead. Tied up at 5-5, Steiglehner won the last two games to secure the 7-5 first-set victory. He used the momentum to take the second set with ease, 6-2.
Patorn Hanchaikul clinched the win for the Wolverines at No. 4 singles, claiming four break points in winning the first set 6-3 against Juan David Velasquez and closings with a 7-5 second set for his second consecutive singles win.
After winning his first set, Swenson was tied at 5-5 in the second before the match was called. Young and Alex Cairo lead 1-0 in their third sets.
Just three matches remain for Michigan in the regular season. Up first, the Wolverines head to State College, Pa., to tke on Penn State on Friday (April 12) at 4 p.m. U-M then takes to Columbus, Ohio, to face off against Ohio State on Sunday (April 14) at noon.
