Laurencin, Sutherland Defend Titles, Wolverines Finish Sixth at B1G Outdoor Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Aasia Laurencin and Savannah Sutherland of the University of Michigan women's track and field team took home gold medals, while the Wolverines finished sixth (72 points) on the final day of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Sunday (May 12) at U-M Track and Field Stadium.
Minnesota captured the team title with 131 points.
Laurencin was the first Wolverine win an event title, running 12.90 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to defeat second-place finisher Paige Magee by just 0.03 seconds. Sutherland followed up with a gold medal of her own in the 400-meter hurdles, running 55.01 to break the Big Ten outdoor meet record. This wins represent back-to-back titles for the pair in their respective events.
Sidney Green earned an eighth place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, picking up a point for U-M with a time of 59.05.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Trinity Henderson, Sutherland, Sophie Isom and Laurencin picked up four points with a fifth-place finish (44.78), tying for the third-fastest relay in program history.
Penelopea Gordon earned a fifth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (4:17.85), while Samantha Hastie finished in eighth place in the 800-meter run (2:08.32). The pair combined for five team points.
Samantha Saenz earned her second podium finish of the weekend, running a season-best 16:19.34 in the 5,000-meter run for sixth place. Tilly Simpson placed seventh with a time of 16:23.67.
A pair of Wolverines made it to the podium in the discus throw, with Corinne Jemison taking third (56.90m/186 feet, 8 inches) and Elizabeth Tapper taking seventh (50.33m/165-1).
In the triple jump, Riley Ammenhauser finished eighth with a mark of 12.64m (41-5.75).
Laurencin and Sutherland were named First Team All-Big Ten while Emma Yungeberg was named Second Team All-Big Ten. Laurencin also earned the B1G Sportsmanship Award.
U-M will continue postseason competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Lexington, Ky., from Wednesday through Saturday, May 22-25. The NCAA will announce preliminary round selections on Thursday (May 16).
