
U-M to Open 2024 Season Hosting Michigan Open

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 27-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team will open the 2024 season by hosting the Michigan Open on Friday (Aug. 31) at 5:30 p.m. at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Mich.
Notes
• The Maize and Blue is coming off another successful season, placing second at the 2023 Big Ten Championships for the second straight year. The team finished third at the Great Lakes Regional to advance to the NCAA Championships, where the Wolverines ran to a 19th place finish.
• U-M is ranked No. 27 in the USTFCCCA Preseason Coaches Poll and comes in at No. 4 in the Great Lakes region. The Wolverines are the second-highest ranked Big Ten team in the region, with Wisconsin checking in at No. 3.
• Five of the seven Wolverines who competed last seasons NCAA Championships return for the 2024 season in Owen MacKenzie, Nathan Lopez, Caleb Jarema, Luke Venhuizen, and Zach Stewart. The team lost two top performers in Tom Brady and Nick Foster, with the pair holding two of Michigan's top-three finishes.
• MacKenzie is poised to build on an impressive 2023 season, finishing eighth at the Big Ten Championships and 18th at the Great Lakes Regional with a career-best 10k time of 30:11.7.
• Junior Ian Hill made his cross country debut at the 2023 Michigan Open, finishing sixth with a time of 15:13.9 in the 5k.
• Lopez is returning after a strong freshman campaign, placing 21st at the 2023 Big Ten Championships, while Anthony Hancock is set for his final season in maize and blue.
• The men will hit the road for their second meet of the season on Sept. 27 at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.
