ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team (0-5-0) scored first but Ball State (2-2-0) scored the next two goals to defeat the Wolverines, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 1) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Michigan struck first, converting a corner kick in the 8th minute for a 1-0 lead. Kali Burrell played a perfect ball into the box, with Jenna Lang heading it in for her second goal of the season.
Ball State answered with a pair of goals over a 10-minute span in the latter stages of the first half, taking a 2-1 lead into the half.
Michigan had an early chance in the second half, with Abby Zugay leaving it for Burrell but her shot went wide less than five minutes into the resumption of play to keep the score at 2-1 Ball State.
U-M continued to dominate possession for the majority of the second half but could not break through. The constant U-M pressure started to wear down the Ball State defense, as the Wolverines tried to equalize in the closing minutes.
Avery Kalitta found Zugay on the left side, with Zugay dribbling into the box but her shot found the keeper with just over 13 minutes to. Ella Jablinskey ripped a shot from the right side with 2:30 remaining but the shot found the side netting. Michigan's final attempt came from Lang, whose shot was saved with less than two minutes to go.
Michigan will hit the road on Thursday (Sept. 5) for its penultimate non-conference, heading to Iowa State to face the Cyclones at 7 p.m. CDT.
