ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Cami Wiseman broke a scoreless tie at the 37:12 mark, midway through the third quarter, to propel the No. 6-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 1-0 win over No. 4 Ohio State on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6) in front of 627 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. It was U-M's eighth straight win and its second over a ranked opponent this season.
Wiseman capitalized on a scrum in front of the Buckeye cage followed by a U-M penalty corner. Michigan had two shots from the arc blocked before sophomore Juliette Manzur put one onto the pads of OSU goalkeeper Abby Danson near the stroke mark. The ball kicked to the right, and Wiseman dove to knock it into the cage for her second goal of her rookie campaign.
Ohio State's (9-1, 1-1 Big Ten) best opportunity of the game came off a penalty corner about four minutes after the Michigan goal. Sophomore/freshman Hala Silverstein stopped the direct shot on the ground then popped up to knock away a chipped rebound attempt out of the air. Silverstein posted four total saves to earn her first complete-game shutout and Michigan's fourth in five games.
In all, Michigan outshot the Buckeyes, 10-8, and outcornered them, 7-6. Ohio State's Danson earned two saves on three U-M shots on goal. She was pulled with 5:53 to play in the fourth quarter -- just after the Wolverines were issued a five-minute yellow card. But Michigan largely maintained possession late to kill off the two-player advantage and close out the victory.
The Wolverines (8-1, 2-0 Big Ten) will remain home to host a pair of games next weekend at Ocker Field, welcoming Rutgers at 4 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 11) and Ball State at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 13) in their non-conference finale. Both games will be streamed live on B1G+, while admission is free to all regular-season home games.
