MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team lost 84-81 in overtime to Minnesota on a last-second three-point heave on Thursday night (Jan. 16) at Williams Arena.
Leaders and Best
Danny Wolf led Michigan in all categories with a double-double (23 points, 10 rebounds) and seven assists. Vladislav Goldin contributed 18 points and eight rebounds. Will Tschetter had 15, including a trio of three-pointers, and Tre Donaldson had 14 points and five assists.
Overtime
Knotted at 71 to start the extra session, Minnesota (9-9, 1-6 Big Ten) opened the scoring with a three-pointer, followed by a Goldin dunk. The Wolverines (13-4, 5-1 Big Ten) matched each Gophers basket until evening the score at 78 on a Nimari Burnett free throw. With U-M trailing 81-79, Wolf connected on a layup to draw the Maize and Blue even again.
With seven seconds left and without a timeout, the Gophers hurried the ball down the floor and found Dawson Garcia, who launched a shot from a few feet inside the half-court line that ended the game.
Second Half
A Wolf layup extended a Michigan 12-2 run that began in the first half to push its lead to 11, its largest of the game, 42-31. Despite going scoreless for more than five minutes, Minnesota used tight defense and a 10-0 stretch to tie the game at 51 with 10:15 remaining.
Michigan regained the lead with nine minutes to go on Tschetter's first field goal of the second half after having scored 11 in the first 20 minutes. U-M held its advantage for the next four minutes until a tie game forced a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading runs.
A pair of Goldin free throws tied up the game 66-66 with just over two minutes remaining. Minnesota proceeded to miss two consecutive field goals, leaving room for Michigan to take the lead. A costly Golden Gophers' turnover with 36 seconds left in regulation opened the door for a Wolf three-pointer to take a 71-69 lead. Minnesota free throws tied up the game at the end of regulation, forcing overtime.
First Half
Two straight Tschetter three-point baskets turned the tide for Michigan after its offense struggled early with three turnovers committed before a field goal was made. The Wolverines' defense held the Gophers scoreless for four minutes until Minnesota made up the points to lead by one with 11:01 to go.
Michigan never let up its lead the remainder of the first half, extending it to nine, 40-31, by the end of the half thanks to 10 consecutive points.
The Wolverines had three scorers in double figures at the end of the first 20 minutes of play -- Tschetter and Donaldson with 11 each and Goldin (10), who added six boards to Michigan's 27 total. U-M shot 7-for-13 (53.8 percent) from three, while Minnesota was 2-for-14 (14.3 percent)
