CHICAGO, Ill. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team fell to Illinois 321.700-316.600 at the Windy City Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 18) at Nay Pier.
The Maize and Blue took two event titles on the parallel bars and the high bar in addition to five podium finishes. Robert Noll earned the high bar title with a score of 14.050 while Logan McKeown earned the parallel bar title with a score of 14.350.
Charlie Larson and Aaronson Mansberger made their Wolverine debut.
How it Happened
Floor Exercise
Syam Buradagunta led off the rotation with a score of 13.100, while Larson posted a 13.650 to finish second and lead the Wolverines in the event. Larson's score was just 0.050 points behind the title winner.
Pommel Horse
Mansberger made his U-M debut on pommel horse, closing out the rotation with a score of 14.450 for a second-place finish. McKeown earned the second-highest score for the Wolverines with a 13.100.
Still Rings
Noll opened the rotation for the Wolverines, with his 13.350 being 0.200 higher than his score in the season opener. Akshay Puri closed the event and led U-M with a score of 13.650 to finish second. Puri's score improved by 0.750 points in week two. Michigan posted a score of 155.100 through the first three rotations.
Vault
David Wolma finished third with a 14.000 to lead off the rotation, while Noll posted the second-best U-M score with a 13.850 in his season debut on the event.
Parallel Bars
Michigan was solid on the parallel bars, posting a team score of 54.450 to Illinois' 51.200. McKeown earned the team's first event title of the day, while freshman Carson Eshleman finished third with a 13.850. McKeown's score improved by 0.600 points after the season opener.
High Bar
High bar was the strongest event for the Maize and Blue, with the team earning a score of 54.950, outpacing the Illini's 51.150. Noll earned a first-place finish and improved on last week's score by 0.650 points. Eshleman earned his second podium finish of the day, finishing third and coming just 0.050 points behind the second-place finisher. Despite a strong final two rotations, the Wolverines were unable to close the gap and fell to Illinois.
