ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end, as No. 21-ranked Michigan State used a 15-0 run to start the third quarter en route to an 88-58 win on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 25) at Crisler Center in front of 10,873 fans -- the fourth-largest crowd in program history.
Jordan Hobbs led the Wolverines with 15 points and five rebounds, while Olivia Olson added 14 points and Mila Holloway contributed 13. MSU caught fire in the second half, hitting eight of its 10 triples on the afternoon in the final 20 minutes. The Spartans also held a 40-33 advantage on the glass and turned 11 offensive rebounds into 12 second-chance points.
Michigan held a four-point lead at the halftime break, but MSU quickly erased it with 10 straight points to force a Michigan timeout with 7:22 remaining in the third. The Spartans' run continued from there, scoring five more to cap an opening 15-0 run before Hobbs got Michigan on the board with a pair of free throws at the 5:13 mark to pull the Wolverines back within single digits.
An Olson three-pointer in transition trimmed the MSU lead to seven, 45-38, with just under five minutes remaining. MSU again answered with a run, ripping off eight consecutive points to regain a double-digit lead.
MSU outscored Michigan, 28-13, over the final 10 minutes to pick up the win in the first-ever meeting between the two programs as ranked teams.
The Spartans started fast in the opening quarter, taking a 10-5 lead in the early going before five straight points from Holloway pulled Michigan even. The teams went back and forth over the remainder of the quarter, with a pair of Hobbs free throws at the 1:33 mark giving Michigan an 18-17 lead after 10 minutes.
Michigan scored 12 of the first 18 points of the second quarter, taking a 30-23 lead on a Hobbs triple at the 3:33 mark. The Spartans climbed within three points over the closing minute, but Holloway split a pair of free throws for a 33-29 U-M halftime lead.
U-M hits the road this week, heading to Wisconsin for a Wednesday (Jan. 29) contest at 6:30 p.m. CST.
