
Michigan Drops First Dual Match of Season to No. 21 NC State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team lost its first dual match of the season 4-2 on Friday (Jan. 31) at the hands of No. 21 NC State at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines ceded the doubles point for the first time this season, giving the Wolfpack an early 1-0 edge.
Patorn Hanchaikul and Bjorn Swenson won their respective first sets in singles play, but Michigan found itself down on the other four courts. Benjamin Kittay and Nicholas Steiglehner rebounded to force third sets.
Hanchaikul put Michigan on the board, winning 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5. Tied at 4-4 in the second set, Hanchaikul collected two straight games to seal the victory.
No. 26-ranked Martin Borisiouk took a 6-3, 6-4 win off Will Cooksey at No. 3 to put the Pack back on top 2-1.
At No. 1 singles, No. 17 Braden Shick took a 7-6 (5) first set before a 6-0 second set over No. 59 Gavin Young.
Jules Leroux clinched the match for NC State at No. 6, winning 6-2 in the third set versus Steiglehner before Kittay took a 6-2 third set at No. 2 to extend his win streak to four straight.
Michigan will return to the Varsity Tennis Center on Sunday (Feb. 2) at noon, when the Wolverines welcome No. 24 Harvard.
