Jacobs, Demetrician Lead Michigan to Sweep of Ohio State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind Allison Jacobs and Ella Demetrician, the University of Michigan volleyball team, swept rival Ohio State (25-17, 25-23, 25-18) on Friday night (Nov. 14) at Crisler Center.
Michigan (18-8, 8-7 Big Ten) was led by Jacobs, who recorded a match-leading 14 kills, doing so on a .444 hitting percentage and added seven digs and two aces. Jacobs tallied the 1,000th kill of her collegiate career to win set two. Demetrician closely followed with 13 kills on a .333 hitting percentage. Morgan Burke and Camille Edwards paced the offense to a .337 hitting percentage, recording 16 and 14 assists, respectively. Burke added three aces on the night. Maddi Cuchran helped defensively with a team-leading 13 digs.
Ohio State (5-18, 2-13 Big Ten) took the first point of the match with a kill, but Michigan responded with a 5-0 run highlighted by a kill and a block from Serena Nyambio. The Buckeyes cut the U-M lead to one at 6-5, but a kill from Jacobs kept Michigan in front, and later, her ace put U-M up 9-6. Ohio State attempted a comeback and cut the score to 10-9 with an ace of its own. Burke recorded an ace to put Michigan up 12-9 and, after an OSU kill, the Wolverines went on a 7-1 run to take an 18-11 lead paced by Jacobs' two kills and a block and kill from Jenna Hanes. A service error ended the Michigan run, but it continued to add to the lead, taking four of the next five points with a solo block from Hanes and an ace from Jacobs for a 22-13 advantage. The Buckeyes took four more points in the set, but a kill from Nyambio ended the first set with U-M winning 25-17.
The second set was a tighter battle with six ties and three lead changes, with Ohio State in control for most of the set. The Buckeyes opened on a 6-3 run, but Michigan rallied to take an 8-6 lead after kills from Jacobs and Demetrician. Neither team was able to gain a large advantage until Michigan took four of five points, led by Hanes, who recorded a kill and a block to cut the Ohio State lead to 16-15. The Buckeyes took the next point, but Michigan responded with a 3-0 run to take an 18-17 lead with a block from Nyambio and Sydney Schnichels leading the way. Ohio State retook the lead at 19-18, but a Demetrician kill tied it at 19. The Buckeyes took the next two points to bring the match to 21-19, but two OSU errors and a block from Nyambio and Cymarah Gordon put Michigan back in front 22-21. After an Ohio State timeout, the Buckeyes tied the match at 22 before an OSU attack error put the Wolverines back in front. A Buckeye kill tied the match at 23, but back-to-back kills from Jacobs ended the set with U-M winning 25-23, as Jacobs recorded the 999th and 1,000th kills of her collegiate career.
Michigan opened the third set on a 6-1 run and controlled the rest of the match. On the run, Nyambio tallied three kills, and a kill from Jacobs and Hanes put Michigan up 8-3. OSU chipped away and brought the match to within two at 8-6 and 9-7, but Buckeyes errors kept Michigan in control. The Wolverines used a 3-0 run to go up 16-10 with Burke recording back-to-back aces. After two straight points for the Buckeyes, an OSU service error brought Michigan to a five-point lead at 20-15. Ohio State took three of the next five points to cut the lead to 22-18, but Michigan closed out the match on a 3-0 run, with back-to-back kills from Demetrician securing the 25-18 set win and match win.
The Wolverines close out the weekend hosting another rival, Michigan State, on Sunday (Nov. 16) at 2 p.m. inside Crisler Center. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
