NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell to No. 9 Yale, 12-6, on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15) at Reese Stadium.
The Wolverines (1-1) were unable to overcome an early 5-1 deficit as the Bulldogs (1-0) led wire-to-wire. Seniors Jill Smith and Julia Schwabe led Michigan with three points each, as both scored a pair of goals and had an assist. Smith added three ground balls, and Erin O'Grady made 12 saves in the cage.
Yale jumped out to a fast 3-0 lead before Ava Class buried the first goal of the game for the Wolverines with just over six minutes to play in the first quarter. However, the Bulldogs answered back with a pair of goals to take a 5-1 advantage after 15 minutes of action.
Smith opened the second quarter with a behind-the-back goal off a pass from Schwabe to bring U-M within three of Yale with 14 minutes left in the half. Schwabe capitalized on a free position opportunity to cut the lead to two, but Yale netted its sixth goal to double up the Wolverines with 9:07 to play in the first half.
Smith drove down the lane and scored high to bring Michigan within two as it went into the halftime break trailing Yale, 6-4. The Wolverines won the draw control battle, 7-5, in the first half, while Smith and Schwabe each recorded two points.
Michigan struck first as O'Grady made a save on the defensive end and started the fast break. Smith raced up the field and delivered to Caroline Byrd, who buried the ball into the back of the cage to bring U-M within one to start the third quarter. The two teams traded goals as Yale responded before Schwabe converted on her second free position of the afternoon. The Bulldogs scored the final goal of the quarter, taking an 8-6 lead into the final 15 minutes.
Yale dominated the final quarter, outscoring Michigan, 4-0, to secure the home win.
U-M opens its 2025 home slate Wednesday (Feb. 19) when it hosts Central Michigan for a 4 p.m. contest.
