
Michigan Wins Three Event Titles, Finishes Third at Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team ended the Big Ten Championships on a high note on Saturday (Feb. 22) at McCorkle Aquatic Pavillion, winning two individual Big Ten titles and the final relay event of the meet to finish third overall with 1,149.5 points. No. 14 Ohio State won the team title with 1,313.5 points and No. 7 Indiana was the runner-up (1,255.5).
The final preliminary session saw seven Michigan swimmers reach a championship final. Casey Chung reached her second 'A' final in as many days in the 200-yard backstroke. U-M packed three swimmers in the 100-yard freestyle championship final as Stephanie Balduccini, Lindsay Flynn and Brady Kendall finished in the top eight overall. Letitia Sim punched her ticket to the 200-yard breaststroke 'A' final, while Hannah Bellard and Ella Jo Piersma earned a place in the fastest heat of the 200-yard butterfly. In diving, Kiarra Milligan reached the consolation final for the second straight day after taking 13th in the preliminary round of the platform dive.
Milligan opened the final session with a score of 216.65 in the platform dive to finish 15th overall. Chung kicked off the swimming portion of the session with a time of 1:55.60 to finish seventh in the 200-yard backstroke.
Flynn took the first Big Ten title of the evening for the Maize and Blue, winning the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.30 seconds. Balduccini finished fourth with a mark of 47.40 while Kendall took eighth by touching the wall in 48.60.
Sim took bronze in the 200-yard breaststroke in a close race, clocking a 2:07.28 and finishing just .06 seconds behind the co-Big Ten champions. Bellard dominated the 200-yard butterfly final, posting a time of 1:52.04 to outpace the next-closest swimmer by more than three seconds. The win marks the first individual conference crown in Bellard's career.
Michigan closed out the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, breaking the championship meet record with a time of 3:08.89. The quartet of Balduccini, Flynn, Brady Kendall and Claire Newman won the event for the second straight year and 22nd time overall.
Next up, select Michigan swimmers will participate in the Last Chance Meet on Sunday, March 2. The location and start time are to be determined.
