ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team used a four-run seventh inning to defeat visiting Toledo, 6-4, at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, on Tuesday afternoon (March 11).
Michigan (9-6) was powered by two home runs. AJ Rausch opened the U-M offense with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first, while Mitch Voit put the Wolverines in front with a three-run blast in the seventh. Rausch added another hit and scored on the Voit home run, making him the only Wolverine with multiple hits and runs in the contest.
Michael Quedens drew the start on the mound but was pulled early. Cade Connolly pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two. Ricky Kidd followed with two scoreless frames before Tate Carey scattered six hits across two innings but allowed only one run to earn the win. Will Rogers closed out the game with a strikeout in the ninth, securing his fourth save of the season.
Toledo (5-10) struck first, scoring one run in the opening inning after sending seven batters to the plate. However, Connolly forced a flyout to end the inning and strand the bases loaded. U-M immediately responded as leadoff hitter Rausch took the first pitch he saw deep to tie the game. The Wolverines added another run in the second when Cade Ladehoff singled and later scored on a Cole Caruso double.
Both teams were held scoreless with just one baserunner each from the third through the sixth innings. In the top of the seventh, Toledo took the lead after two free passes put runners on. A sacrifice bunt moved them over, and a single drove both in, giving the Rockets a 3-2 advantage.
The Wolverines answered with a big inning, scoring four runs on four hits. Jeter Ybarra doubled with one out and later scored on a two-out single from Jonathan Kim. Voit then crushed a three-run home run off the batter's eye in center field, putting Michigan ahead 6-3.
The Rockets attempted a comeback in the ninth after a scoreless eighth. The first three Toledo batters singled to load the bases. Rogers came in and struck out the first batter he faced. A sacrifice fly brought in one run but also recorded the second out of the inning. A fielder's choice ended the game, sealing the U-M victory.
Michigan will return to action against in-state rival Michigan State for a non-conference midweek game on Wednesday (March 12) at 4 p.m., streaming live on B1G+.
