LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team had a series win streak over Nebraska snuffed out on Friday (March 14), as the Cornhuskers upended the No. 18-ranked Wolverines 5-2 in Nebraska's first win in the series since 2014.
The Wolverines made quick work of the Huskers in doubles to take the point. Will Cooksey and Patorn Hanchaikul lost just one game to Colson Wells and Leo Linquet at No. 3 doubles to take a 6-1 match. Benjamin Kittay and Bjorn Swenson followed with a 6-3 win at No. 1, winning three straight games after being tied up at 3-3.
Nebraska rebounded early in singles, winning at Nos. 1 and 3 to take the lead in the team score. The Cornhuskers continued to take first sets, eventually winning all six.
Nicholas Steiglehner and Cooksey forced third sets at No. 2 and No. 5, but shortly thereafter Nebraska grabbed another singles win taking No. 6 in straight sets. Trailing 3-1, Michigan needed wins on the remaining courts, Nos. 2, 4 and 5.
Just as Hanchaikul pushed his match with Roni Hietaranta into a third set, Cooksey secured the win over Anton Shepp at No. 2 singles, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3.
Moments later, Nebraska clinched the win as Linquet topped Steiglehner 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-1.
Hanchaikul and Hietaranta played out their match at No. 4, with Hiertaranta earning the win 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-2.
