
Class Records Seven Points, U-M Comes Up Short at No. 5 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell, 14-12, in a tightly contested battle at No. 5 Maryland Sunday afternoon (March 16) at the Terrapins' Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
The Wolverines (5-3, 0-1 B1G) were led by graduate student Ava Class, who recorded a career-high seven points with six goals and one assist. Senior Jill Smith notched her third straight game with three or more goals with a hat trick, while Kaylee Dyer had two goals for Michigan.
Junior Grace Callahan scored her second career goal, while Taylor Cullen had two caused turnovers and one ground ball for the defense. Senior Erin O'Grady made 10 saves in goal for the Wolverines against the powerful Terrapin (5-1, 1-0 B1G) offense.
The first quarter saw three lead changes and three ties as Dyer scored two for the Wolverines but it was Maryland who took the slight 5-4 lead into the second 15 minutes of action.
Class opened the second quarter with two straight goals to put Michigan back on top of the Terps, 6-5, with 12:14 remaining in the half. Maryland notched a pair of its own goals to swing the lead back into its favor with just over 10 minutes to play. Following a scoreless five minutes, Michigan had numbers as Callahan rushed down the field and got the ball up to Smith, who fired a shot to knot the game at 7-7. However, Maryland scored less than two minutes later and carried the 8-7 advantage into the halftime break.
Class led the Wolverines offensively with a hat trick in the first half of action, while Smith and Dyer both had a pair of goals.
Maryland outscored Michigan, 3-1, to open the third quarter before Class netted back-to-back goals with 3:37 left in the third to bring U-M within one, 11-10. The Terrapins closed out the quarter with two more goals and went into the fourth quarter with a 13-10 advantage.
Class added her sixth goal to open the final quarter with a free position opportunity but Maryland answered with 10 minutes to play to take a 14-11 advantage. Callahan took the ball down the entirety of the field herself and notched her second career goal with six minutes to play to bring U-M within two once again.
Michigan saw two free position opportunities in the closing minutes but was unable to capitalize on the possessions as it fell in its first conference contest of the season.
U-M will return home for its first-ever Big Ten Conference game against USC Thursday (March 20) at 6 p.m. at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
