CAMDEN, N.J. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan rowing program opened its season with one first-place and six second-place finishes at the Big Ten/Ivy Dust Up on Saturday (March 22) at Cooper River Yacht Club. All six teams racing at the event ranked within the top 14 of the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) week one national poll in a competitive season-opening field.

The morning races at Cooper River opened to a temperature of 54 degrees with a light breeze, and the Wolverines were second on the water with an 8:10 a.m. start for the 1V4. Michigan began the day with a first-place finish (7:22.8) in the three-boat race against Syracuse and Penn, finishing +2.94 ahead of the second-place Orange.

Next up was the Wolverines' 2V8, which crossed the finish line in second place to a strong showing from Syracuse, before Michigan's 1V8 closed out the morning session with an additional second-place (6:43.97) finish. In a tightly contested event, U-M came up just 1.27 seconds behind the Penn varsity eight and 0.71 seconds ahead of Syracuse.

All of U-M's morning races took place against Syracuse and Penn, ranked No. 10 and No. 11 in the nation, respectively.

A rise in temperature to 60 degrees came with increased wind speeds for the afternoon session, allowing for faster times across the board. U-M competed against No. 6 Yale in four races during the afternoon hours, finishing second in all four events.

U-M heads to familiar territory next Saturday (March 29) at the Griggs Reservoir in Columbus, Ohio, for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Race times and streaming information are to be announced.
