CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of Michigan softball team broke a scoreless tie in the fifth and added insurance late to earn a 2-0 win at North Carolina on Tuesday night (March 4) at the Tar Heels' Anderson Softball Stadium. It was the Wolverines' sixth straight win on their current spring-break trip and their sixth shutout win this season.
Sophomore center fielder Jenissa Conway hammered a solo home run past the scoreboard in left-center field with two outs in the fifth to plate the first and game-winning run and record her fourth long ball of the season -- and second in as many games. Freshman designated player Lauren Putz stayed hot with two hits on the day and scored an insurance tally in the sixth when junior first baseman Madi Ramey looped a well-placed single down the line into shallow left field and just out of reach of UNC's diving shortstop.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Erin Hoehn (8-2) and senior RHP Lauren Derkowski combined for the shutout. Hoehn held UNC (18-4) without a run despite six hits allowed over the first 4.2 innings. Derkowski entered with two on and two outs in the fifth and forced a 4-3 groundout after just three pitches. She allowed one baserunner in each of the final two frames on one hit and a walk but did not allow a runner past second base to secure her third save this season.
Hoehn and Derkowski struck out just one apiece but benefitted from solid defensive play behind them. The Tar Heels' biggest threat came in the third inning when, with runners on first and second with two outs, they laced a single up the middle. The lead runner was waved home, but Conway came up firing from center field to throw her out at home, getting the ball to junior/sophomore catcher Lilly Vallimont with plenty of time to make the tag. It was Conway's second outfield assist of the season.
Michigan (14-6) will travel to Greenville, N.C. tomorrow (Wednesday, March 5) to take on East Carolina at 5 p.m. at Max R. Joyner Softball Stadium. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
