AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan rowing program raced against top-ranked Texas on Saturday (April 12) at Lady Bird Lake, coming up short in all four events but gaining valuable experience and posting competitive times as the postseason approaches.
Conditions for racing were ideal, with clear skies, 64-degree temperatures, and a light breeze contributing to a fair environment for all boats.
Michigan's first varsity four opened the day and held close with the Longhorns through the opening 1,000 meters (-2.5). In the second half of the race, Texas pulled away and secured the win by eight seconds.
The first varsity eight also maintained contact through the midway point, trailing by just 2.3 seconds at the 1,000-meter buoy. However, the Longhorns surged in the back half of the race to win by 7.2 seconds.
In the second varsity eight race, Texas widened the margin, taking the race by 12.3 seconds. The second varsity four race concluded the morning, with Michigan finishing 8.1 seconds behind.
The Wolverines return to action next weekend (April 18-19), hosting 23 teams at the Big Ten Invitational in Sarasota, Florida. Race times are to be announced.
