ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore centerfielder Jenissa Conway homered in the first and fifth innings and the University of Michigan softball team scored six runs in the sixth to earn an 11-3 run-rule win over Rutgers on Sunday afternoon (April 13) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Carol Hutchins Stadium and Alumni Field.
It marked Conway's third multi-homer performance in the last five home games, bringing her season total to a team-best 15. She finished with five RBI, driving in all of Michigan's runs prior to the sixth, and scored three times.
Junior second baseman Indiana Langford scored three runs, reaching in all four plate appearances on two singles and two walks. Junior/sophomore catcher Lilly Vallimont went 3-for-4, capping the win with a two-run homer to end the game.
Sophomore righthander Erin Hoehn (16-2) gave up three runs on three hits and two walks and struck out three in 5.1 innings. Freshman Kat Meyers recorded the final two outs in the sixth to notch her first collegiate save.
Michigan jumped ahead early, with Langford bunting for a leadoff single and Conway blasting a two-run homer to right center three pitches later. Hoehn retired 10 straight batters before Rutgers cut the lead in half with a one-out solo homer in the fourth.
Michigan extended the lead in the fifth after a single from Hoehn, an infield hit by Langford, and Conway's second home run of the game — a three-run shot to center.
Rutgers responded with two runs in the top of the sixth to trim the deficit to 5-3, but Michigan sealed the win in the bottom half with six runs on four hits, two walks, and two errors.
Junior third baseman Maddie Erickson started the frame with a double, and sophomore Reganne Bennett drove her in with a pinch-hit RBI single. With two outs, freshman Lauren Putz knocked in another run and scored on a fielding error, setting the stage for Vallimont's walk-off homer to deep left center.
Michigan (30-12, 8-4 Big Ten) will wrap up the series against Rutgers at 4:30 p.m. Monday (April 14) at Hutchins Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network, and tickets remain available through the U-M Ticket Office.
