SARASOTA, Fla. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan rowing program wrapped up racing at the Big Ten Invitational on Saturday (April 19). In an opportunity to test its speed against other ranked opponents, U-M raced competitively but fell short in its varsity eights and fours to some of the nation's fastest programs.
Conditions were 74 degrees and sunny with a strong crosswind at the start of day two. Michigan's early morning races matched up against a strong field consisting of No. 3 Washington, No. 6 Tennessee, No. 7 Brown, No. 11 Penn, and No. 14 Ohio State.
The first quarter of the 1V8 race was closely contested, with Tennessee, Washington, Brown, and Michigan rowing bow-to-bow through the 500-meter mark. Tennessee and Washington pulled ahead over the next stretch of water, and although Michigan stayed even with Brown through most of the race, it fell just short to finish fourth.
U-M also finished fourth in the 2V8 and 1V4 races after strong third-place battles with Tennessee. Washington took commanding victories in both events.
The Wolverines delivered a strong effort in the 2V4, staying level with Washington through the first 500 meters. The Huskies took a one-seat lead at the midpoint and pulled away in the next 500. Michigan countered with a move in the final stretch, but Washington responded to take the race by four seats.
Michigan's 3V4 competed well with Rutgers through the first half of its late morning race before the Scarlet Knights pulled away, leading to a U-M second-place finish.
The Maize and Blue 1N8 and 2N8 boats wrapped up the competition with fifth- and second-place finishes, respectively.
The Wolverines will take several weeks off from competition before returning to race at the Big Ten Championship on May 20-21 in Indianapolis, Ind.
