A big second inning gave the Wolverines the lead, which opened with a single from Jeter Ybarra. A flyout recorded the first out, but a single from Colby Turner put runners on the corners with one out. Matt Spear reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Ybarra from third, and Turner was safe at second after an MSU error. Pace hit a blooper to right field to load the bases. A strikeout recorded the second out of the inning, but Brayden Jefferis delivered a two-out single, scoring Turner. Voit added another hit, doubling the U-M lead by scoring Spear and Pace. A fielder's choice ended the inning.
In the third inning, the Spartans got one run back on one hit, but Lally stranded the bases loaded after a strikeout and a foulout. Cole Caruso singled with one out in the third but was left on base. Lally recomposed himself and pitched a 1-2-3 fourth inning with a strikeout. A home run from Pace opened the fourth inning and Benny Casillas followed with a double, but U-M could not add more.
The Spartans opened the fifth inning with a double, but a double play ended the inning. The Wolverines went down in order in the bottom of the frame. Lally pitched a scoreless sixth inning and Pace doubled with one out. After a groundout, Jefferis singled, allowing Pace to score from second.
