ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team belted four home runs but dropped a 12-8 slugfest against No. 7 UCLA in its home finale Monday (April 28) in front of 1,171 fans at the Wilpon Complex, home of Carol Hutchins Stadium and Alumni Field.
Michigan posted 11 hits to UCLA's 13 and earned multiple base knocks from four different players, most notably freshman designated player Lauren Putz, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Senior leftfielder Ellie Sieler also posted two hits and two RBI and contributed two of the Wolverines' four home runs -- two apiece in the first and fifth innings.
UCLA struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but Michigan responded in a big way in the bottom half, scoring five runs on four hits and a walk and chasing the Bruin starter from the circle early. Junior second baseman Indiana Langford led off with a first-pitch double to left, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on another that got away. Putz blooped an RBI double to shallow left before Sieler and junior third baseman Maddie Erickson knocked out consecutive home runs to right and leftfield, respectively.
The Bruins cut the lead to one with a three-run homer in the second and took advantage of a Michigan miscue to score the tying run in the fourth. UCLA took the lead with a four-spot in the next inning, scoring with a two-run double to center and a two-run single to rightfield in back-to-back at-bats after loading the bases with no outs.
But Michigan kept fighting. Putz led off the bottom of the fifth with a lined solo shot just over the rightfield fence for her 12th long ball of the season, and junior/sophomore catcher Lilly Vallimont followed suit two batters later with a solo homer to straightaway centerfield.
UCLA responded with two home runs of its own to plate three runs in the sixth, and Michigan led off the home half with three consecutive singles, earning an RBI from Putz on a bouncer through the right side. The Wolverines' rally was cut short by a double play to end the sixth inning and again in the bottom of the seventh after Sieler led off the frame with a single to centerfield.
All five Michigan pitchers saw time in the circle. Sophomore RHP Erin Hoehn (16-5) took the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in relief in the fourth inning. She allowed four runs -- three earned -- on two hits and one walk through two innings.
Michigan (32-18, 9-10 Big Ten) will travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for its final regular-season series this weekend against Minnesota. The teams will square off at 6 p.m. CT on Friday (May 2), 1 p.m. CT on Saturday (May 3) and noon CT on Sunday (May 4). All three games will be streamed live on B1G+.
