COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- As all five starting Wolverines closed among the top 25, the University of Michigan women's golf team held a seven-stroke lead most of the final round and posted a 298 final-round total today (Monday, April 7) to win the Terrapin Invitational with an 877 54-hole tally at the University of Maryland Golf Course.
The Maize and Blue closed its regular season winning its first tournament in nearly a year to the day. With an 855 tally, the Wolverines won the 2024 Chattanooga Classic (April 7-9) at the Council Fire Golf Club. The Terrapin Invitational win was the first top-five finish this season.
Heading to the nation's capital, the Wolverines were able to get off to a solid start using two even par 72s from junior Sydney Sung and sophomore Grace Wang. At the same time, redshirt sophomore Mara Janess added a 73 to help U-M post a 292 to place two shots back of first-round leader Notre Dame (290).
Moving directly into the second 18 of Sunday's first day of play, junior Lauren Sung caught fire as she used six birdies to tally a season low and U-M's lowest team single round with her 68 (-4). Adding a 71 (-1) from Janess and three 74s from the remaining starters, the Maize and Blue tied its season-low team total with a 287 (-1). With a 579 36-hole total, the Wolverines moved into the tournament lead by two shots over host Maryland (581).
As the 14-team field battled chilly and windy conditions in the final round, the Wolverines built an early seven-shot lead in the final round. With a career-low 73 from freshman Thomasine Bartholdson and another from Lauren Sung, Michigan closed with a 298 -- one of just three sub-300 final rounds -- to capture the hardware with an 877 54-hole total.
With her highlighted second-round tally, Lauren Sung recorded her career-best finish tying for third with an even-par 216 (75-68-73) total. The finish marked the first top five of her three-year career. The even par finish gives her a third 54-hole event at or below par this season.
Tying for 15th at 220 (73-71-76), Janess posted her fourth top-15 finish over her last five events and sixth this season. Meanwhile, Wang tallied her first career top-20 as she tied for 19th with a career-low 222 (72-74-76). She tied her career-low single round with her 72 in the first round.
Sydney Sung added a fourth top-25 finish as she tied for 23rd (223), while Bartholdson shattered her prior 54-hole best by 19 strokes. In her third straight start, she posted three straight career-low rounds with her 77, 74 and 73 helping her to a 224 total.
Playing as an individual, freshman Jenna Shilts used a career-low opening even par 72 to pace her to a new career-low 229 total, as she tied for 40th.
The Maize and Blue will return to Ann Arbor to finish finals and prep work before returning to Maryland for the 2025 Big Ten Championships in Havre de Grace, Md. The conference tournament is scheduled to be played Friday through Sunday (April 18-20) at the Bulle Rock Golf Course.
