ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore right-handed pitcher Erin Hoehn starred on both sides of the ball to lead the University of Michigan softball team to a 6-2 win over in-state foe Central Michigan in its first of a four-game homestand on Wednesday evening (April 9) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Carol Hutchins Stadium and Alumni Field.
Hoen (15-2) held CMU to one run on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts over six innings while helping her own cause with her first collegiate homer -- a three-run blast in the second inning. Hoehn also tied her win total from a season ago.
Michigan (28-12) struck quickly in the game, plating two in the first inning after putting its first two batters in scoring position. Sophomore right fielder Ella Stephenson looped a one-out RBI single into shallow right then put herself in a rundown between first and second during the next at-bat to allow sophomore center fielder Jenissa Conway to score from third base.
After the Chippewas (16-18) cut their deficit in half on a sacrifice fly in the second, Michigan surged in the bottom half, leading off again with two hard hits to the outfield to set up Hoehn's three-run blast to center field.
The Wolverines rallied with two outs to add another run in the fifth. Junior second baseman Indiana Langford beat out an infield single -- her third of the day and earned on an overturned review -- and Conway sent her home in the next at-bat, sailing a triple off the center-field wall. It was her second three-bagger of the season.
CMU narrowed the final score on an RBI groundout before freshman RHP Kat Meyers, who entered at the start of the inning, got the final two outs with a foul out and fly out.
Michigan will kick off a three-game home set against Rutgers at 5 p.m. on Saturday (April 12) before squaring off at 2 p.m. Sunday (April 13) and 4:30 p.m. on Monday (April 14) at Hutchins Stadium. Monday's slate will aired live on Big Ten Network, while tickets are still available for all three games through the U-M Ticket Office.
