Thomson Opens with 69 on Day One of NCAA Urbana Regional

URBANA, Ill. -- With his 21st sub-par round of the season, senior Hunter Thomson of the University of Michigan men's golf team opened his NCAA Urbana Regional with a two-under 69 today (Monday, May 12) and positioned himself in a tie for sixth among the 75-golfer field.
In his second straight NCAA postseason appearance, Thomson is among 10 invited individuals playing at the Illini's home course at the Atkins Golf Club. Starting on the first tee in the day's final pairing, Thomson birdied two of his first three holes (Nos 1 and 3) to go two-under. A bogey on the fifth gave a shot back as he turned one-under after four straight pars.
Heading to the day's second nine, he drew even after a second bogey on the 11th. Notching two more birdies on Nos. 13 and 15, while adding five more pars, he rallied over the final seven holes to finish his 69 (-2) and put himself among the top 10 (t-6th).
Tied with nine others for the sixth position, Thomson will again play in the final pairing for Round 2 -- Cincinnati's Ryan Ford (69, -2) and Wright State's Shance Ocha (72, +1). The trio is expected to tee off at 10:34 a.m. CT.
Led by day-one leader and Illini Jackson Buchanan 63 (-8), host Illinois holds a two-shot lead after an opening 277 (-7). Texas Tech is two shots back after its 279 (-5) with UNLV third at 281 (-3). Troy's 283 (-1) saw the regional yield its fourth sub-par team tally.
The top five teams and the top individual spot among non-qualifying teams advance to the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa championships in Carlsbad, Calif.
