
Green, Sutherland Advance to 400m Hurdles Finals at B1G Outdoor Championships

EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team opened the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Friday (May 16) at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., sending a pair of Wolverines to Sunday's finals.
Savannah Sutherland (56.29 seconds) and Sidney Green (57.91) both with their preliminary heats in the 400 meters to automatically qualify for Sunday's final in the event.
Clare McNamara opened the day for the Maize and Blue with a personal-best time of 15.49 in the 100-meter hurdles to sit in 20th in the heptathlon with 778 points. The graduate student cleared 1.60 meters (5 feet, 3 inches) in the high jump to move up to 19th before jumping to 10th place (2,353 points) through the first three events with a personal best mark of 14.67m (48-1.75) in the shot put.
In the final heptathlon event of the day, McNamara ran a personal-best 25.52 in the 200-meter dash but fell to 12th place (3,193 points) in the overall standings. The heptathlon will conclude on Saturday with the long jump, javelin throw and the 800-meter run.
Abigail Russell finished 22nd in the hammer throw with a mark of 53.43m (175-3), the first of three events the freshman will compete in this weekend.
Mary Caroline Heinen finished ninth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 33:53.50, while Gabbie Michael finished 25th (36:50.98).
Samantha Hastie placed 35th in the 1,500-meter run (4:42.86).
Michigan will continue competition at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Saturday (May 17), opening the day at 10 a.m. PT with the heptathlon long jump.
