
Wolverines to Open Postseason at B1G Outdoor Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team will open up postseason outdoor competition at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships hosted by Oregon, Friday through Sunday (May 16-18), at Hayward Field.
Notes
• Wolverines to watch in Eugene include: Savannah Sutherland (400-meter hurdles), Sidney Green (400-meter hurdles), Mary Caroline Heinen (10,000-meter run), Elizabeth Tapper (shot put), and Emma Yungeberg (javelin throw).
• A pair of event groups are ranked in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Event Squad Rankings, with the shot put squad remaining at No. 4 for the third straight week and the 400-meter hurdles squad remaining at No. 10 for the second straight week.
• U-M finished sixth at the 2024 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, scoring 72 points.
• Yungeberg finished second in the javelin throw on the first day of the meet, throwing for 50.89 meters (164 feet, 11 inches) to set the program record for the first of three straight meets. With a fourth-place finish from Samantha Saenz in the 10,000-meter run (33:35.84) and a seventh-place finish from Cate Visscher in the pole vault (4.07m/13 feet, 4.25 inches), the Wolverines sat in fifth after day one.
• Michigan picked up five points in the heptathlon to open day two, with Mia Manson finishing sixth (5,027 points) and Clare McNamara finishing eighth (4,907 points). Manson's mark is No. 9 on the program performers list. Maria Deaviz finished fourth in the shot put (16.82m, 55-2.25) to give the team five points to remain in fifth heading into the final day of competition.
• Sutherland (400-meter hurdles, 12.90 seconds) and Aasia Laurencin (100-meter hurdles, 55.01 seconds) earned first-place finishes in their respective events, with the pair each earning the title for the second straight year. Sutherland's time set the Big Ten Outdoor Championships record.
• Saenz took silver in the 5,000-meter run (16:19.34) while Corinne Jemison finished third in the discus throw (56.90m, 186-8).
• Green (400-meter hurdles, eighth), Penelopea Gordon (1,500-meter run, fifth), Samantha Hastie (800-meter run, eighth) and Tapper (discus throw, seventh) also picked up points for the Wolverines on the final day of competition.
