ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Thirteen Wolverines will represent the University of Michigan women's track and field team at the NCAA East First Round hosted by North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla., from Wednesday-Saturday, May 28-31.
Michigan finished ninth at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships last weekend, breaking two records and earning four medals.
Savannah Sutherland (55.37 seconds) and Sidney Green (57.47) finished 1-2 in the 400-meter hurdles, with Sutherland winning the title for the third straight season. Green was just 0.12 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Sonia Virk of UCLA.
Elizabeth Tapper took silver in the shot put, setting the program record with a personal-best mark of 17.65 meters (57 feet, 11 inches). Emma Yungeberg also set a program record, throwing for 53.08m (191-6) in the javelin throw to finish fourth.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Payton Smith, Sutherland, Green and Trinity Henderson won bronze with a time of 3:32.47 to cross the finish line 0.52 seconds ahead of fourth-place UCLA.
Clare McNamara had a breakout weekend, finishing sixth in the heptathlon and setting five personal bests. Her javelin throw mark of 51.54m (169-1) comes in at No. 2 on the program performers list, making her just the third Wolverine to break 50 meters, while her heptathlon score of 5,698 points is No. 3 on the program performers list. McNamara automatically qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon, as the event is not contested at the East Prelims.
For each individual event contested at each of the first-round sites, the top 48 declared student-athletes will be accepted into the competition. For each relay event, the top 24 declared relay teams will be accepted into the competition. Combined events (heptathlon and decathlon) are not contested at the first-round sites. For combined events, the top 24 declared student-athletes in each event based on their position on the national descending-order list will be accepted directly into the NCAA Championships.
Twelve competitors from each individual event and 12 teams from each relay event advance from each first-round site. The 2025 NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships will be hosted by Oregon at Hayward Field.
