COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan team continued to pile up runs against Ohio State as the Wolverines defeated the Buckeys 11-4 on Sunday afternoon (May 4) in game one of a twinbill at Bill Davis Stadium to win the series.
Over the first two games of their three-game series, U-M has outscored OSU 34-5 after a 23-1, seven-inning win on Saturday (May 3).
Michigan (29-17, 13-10 Big Ten) tallied 13 hits and was led by Brayden Jefferis and Benny Casillas, as each tallied three runs and three hits, while Jefferis added two RBI. Jeter Ybarra collected two hits and three RBI, and Keegan O'Hearn added the same with his first Wolverine home run. Dylan Vigue picked up the win in relief and struck out five over five scoreless innings on three hits.
Ohio State (11-32, 3-20 Big Ten) went down for the first two innings but scored three runs on four hits in the third inning to open the scoring. A strikeout from David Lally Jr. ended the inning, stranding three runners and minimizing the damage.
The Wolverines responded in the top of the fourth. A hit-by-pitch drawn by Ybarra gave U-M its first baserunner since the first inning. A Cole Caruso put U-M runners on the corners with one out, and a fielder's choice scored Ybarra and moved Caruso to third after a throwing error on the play. A groundout scored Caruso, and a single from O'Hearn scored Robert Hamchuk to tie the game at three. OSU got one run back in the fourth, but Vigue came in for Lally and kept the Buckeyes at bay after the first three Buckeyes reached.
In the fifth, U-M took the lead for the first time with back-to-back doubles from Casillas and Jefferis. A single from Ybarra brought home Jefferis for the go-ahead run to bring the score to 5-4.
Hamchuk opened the sixth inning with a single, and O'Hearn hit his first home run of his collegiate career to right field to push the lead to 7-4. Casillas and Jefferis doubled back-to-back again, and Mitch Voit brought Jefferis home with a single for an 8-4 lead. Vigue pitched a 1-2-3 bottom half, and both teams were held scoreless in the seventh inning.
Casillas hit a one-out single in the eighth, and Jefferis followed with a single of his own. Ybarra followed with a two-out double to bring home both runners to increase the U-M lead to 11-4. OSU tried to start a rally in the eighth with a one-out single and two-out walk, but Vigue fanned the final batter looking to end the inning.
U-M went down in order in the ninth, and Brandon Mann took the mound for home half. He issued two free passes to the Buckeyes, but a flyout and lineout clinched the game and the series.
Michigan finishes the doubleheader against Ohio State at 4 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium. The finale will be streamed live on B1G+.
