Michigan Improves to 5-0, Sweeping Marshall on Day Two of Michigan Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team swept Marshall (25-19, 25-21, 25-17) on Saturday night (Sept. 6) on day two of the Michigan Invitational at Crisler Center.
Michigan (5-0) trailed for only a few points in the third set, leading start to finish over the first two sets to sweep the Thundering Herd. Offensively, Lydia Johnson led the way with 12 kills on 18 swings for a .611 hitting percentage. Amalia Simmons and Allison Jacobs also added double-digit kills with 10 apiece. Morgan Burke led the offense with 23 assists, while Ellie White recorded 14 and a career-high four service aces. Maddi Cuchran led the back court with 18 digs, and U-M tallied eight blocks, led by four from Jenna Hanes.
Marshall (4-2) committed two errors to open the match and trailed for the remainder of the set. Johnson tallied the first Wolverine kill, followed by kills from Sydney Schnichels and Jacobs to put U-M up 6-2. After a service error, U-M added to its lead, going on a 4-1 run led by a Jacobs ace. The Thundering Herd cut the Michigan lead to two at 13-11, but a 3-0 Wolverine run with two aces from White kept the Wolverines in front. Marshall got within three points three more times in the set, but a kill from Jacobs put U-M up 20-16. Michigan took five of the final seven points, including an ace from Cuchran and a kill from Jacobs, to clinch the 25-19 set win.
The second set played out much like the first, with he exceptions of a pair of tie scores. U-M jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two Marshall errors and a kill from Johnson. Marshall took the next two points, but Simmons kept Michigan in front with a kill. After a Thundering Herd kill, the Maize and Blue went on a 6-1 run, led by two blocks and a kill from Serena Nyambio. The teams went back and forth for a while with no run larger than two points until a 3-0 Marshall run tied the match at 18. A solo block from Simmons put Michigan back in front, but a kill from Marshall tied the match at 19. Kills from Hanes and Johnson put Michigan ahead by two, and that was all the Wolverines needed. Marshall brought the score to one at 22-21, but two kills from Jacobs and a kill from Nyambio finished off the set 25-21.
The third set was the tightest of the match, with Marshall getting the opening point. A kill from Johnson tied the match at one, and no team took a larger lead than two until a Maize and Blue run of four points starting at 9-9. A service error started the run before Simmons' first career ace. Kills from Jacobs and Johnson forced a Marshall timeout and the Thundering Herd got the next point, but U-M stayed in front with a block from Jacobs and a kill from Nyambio. White tallied her fourth ace of the match to put U-M up 16-11. Marshall battled back, going on a 6-3 run to force a Michigan timeout. Michigan did not lose a point after returning to the court, with two kills and a block from Johnson, a kill and a block from Simmons and a kill and two blocks from Hanes. Johnson and Hanes combined on the final block to give Michigan the 25-17 set win and 3-0 match win.
The Wolverines close out the Michigan Invitational at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 7), hosting Southern Indiana at Crisler Center. The finale will be streamed live B1G+.
