MASON, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and all six singles matches in a 7-0 shutout of Xavier on Tuesday morning (Feb. 24) at the Lindner Tennis Center.
Michigan moved to 2-0 this season when winning the doubles point behind back-to-back wins at No. 1 and No. 3 within a minute of each other. Michigan's top pair of Lily Jones and Jessica Bernales, ranked No. 34, won three of the first four games and never looked back in a 6-2 win.
Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde followed with a 6-3 win at No. 3 moments later, sealing the doubles point for the Maize and Blue. Much like Jones and Bernales, the No. 3 duo won three of the first four games and never let Xavier in the match in a 6-3 victory.
In singles action, U-M grabbed five of six first sets after Reese Miller pulled out a 7-2 win in the tiebreaker at No. 3.
Michigan's top two singles players wasted no time in putting two more points on the board for Michigan. At No. 1, Jones cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory in just 47 minutes to account for U-M's second point. Charney was equally impressive at No. 2, posting the same scoreline in a 6-1, 6-2 victory as Michigan's lead swelled to 3-0.
Sartz-Lunde put the deciding point on the board behind a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 for her first dual-match win of the season. Miller followed with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 triumph at No. 3 for a 5-0 U-M advantage.
Bernales picked up her first singles win of the dual-match campaign, winning a 6-4, 7-5 match at No. 5.
With the team match in hand, Bayley Sheinin recovered after dropping a first-set tiebreaker to split with a 6-1 second-set win. It was all Sheinin in the 10-point tiebreaker as she lost just one point in a 10-1 win to wrap up the 7-0 team victory.
Michigan is back at the Varsity Tennis Center on Sunday (March 1), hosting Duke at noon.
