ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team concluded its home slate with a 4-3 loss against Purdue today (Sunday, April 11) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The loss dropped the Wolverines to 4-13 overall and 3-4 in Big Ten play, while Purdue improved to 6-10 and 2-3 in conference.
The match was also the final home contest in the career of senior Jennifer Boylan (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy), who ended her home career with a pair of victories in today's match. Boylan teamed with junior co-captain Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) to claim the team's only doubles win, an 8-4 victory at the No. 2 slot. She followed with an impressive three-set victory at the No. 4 singles spot, beating Missy Wright (6-0, 2-6, 7-5).
Purdue gained a 1-0 advantage in the match, claiming doubles victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots. The Boilermakers carried the momentum over into singles, winning three of the six matches for the victory.
Despite losing the doubles point, the Wolverines had their chances to pull out the match but could not capitalize. Michigan won matches at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles slots and lost three-set matches at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots that could have provided them with a victory.
In addition to Boylan's victory, junior co-captain Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) won her fourth straight match and 50th of her career (50-32) with a victory at the No. 2 slot. Hart defeated Erika Quebe after dropping the opening set (3-6, 6-2, 6-3). She improved to 11-13 on the season and to 4-3 in conference action.
The Wolverines' other win came as freshman Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) posted a straight-sets (6-1, 6-2) win over Lynsey Fick at the No. 6 singles spot. Vaughn has a 6-15 record on the season and is 4-10 in dual match competition.
